"Women, with their uncanny natures are far deeper than men. They predict what will come long before it comes. They dream it alive overnight, and they read your mind. He had moments, in his marriage, when he had almost feared his wife, and envied her mettle, her red-hot instincts." ~Excerpt from Small Things Like These, Claire Keegan
In all the women's writing circles I have facilitated over three decades, the resounding plaintive wail resounds about finding the time to write. Women are so called to service that we feel, wrongly I suggest, that everything else comes before our writing time. I insist that the opposite is true. Write first. That is why I am calling women together before the onslaught of the holidays that will pull on our time, to write before we do anything else. I call upon women to honor their uncanny natures and manifest their prescience as the scribes, authors, reporters, poets and songstresses that we know we are! This, I suggest, is more our gift to the world than any other customary cooking or cleaning.
If you have little children and four-legged friends, or even two-legged feathered friends, bring them with you into the circles where we write like the medicine women that we are. We make a home space, and we write with the ease and authenticity of honoring our lives and our words. We write with our children around us, with our dogs, our cats, and our chickens. We don't wait for them to be taken care of, settled down, or asleep. That time may not come in the near future. We take care of them as we take care of ourselves and whether or not the cooking and cleaning are done.
We certainly are not waiting until the political scene calms down, because that is not on the horizon. We are not waiting for anything else to happen other than having our writing tools and our community. That is all we need.
Writing Like Medicine Woman circles have a structure that has evolved from our collaborative gatherings, and you are welcome to join it. We breathe together and tune up our receptivity, and then we dive into writing wildly in response to prompts prepared especially and specifically for us. We share. We listen deeply. And we receive feedback about the book we are generating, the article we are planning to submit, the poem or the song we will sing, the essay we are writing.
Join the growing international, intergenerational cohort of Writing Like a Medicine Woman authors and scribes, scientists, educators, mothers and grandmothers, daughters and sisters, and inject your writing with the charge of our shared potential.
