Michel Odent, MD: FETAL LIFE, BIRTH and HEALTH ~ For several decades Michel Odent has played multiple and complementary roles in influencing the history of childbirth and health research. He is familiarly known as the obstetrician who introduced the concepts of birthing pools and home-like birthing rooms. He is the author of over 50 scientific papers and 10 books in 20 languages. His latest book is about the epidemic of caesarian deliveries.

Opening Ceremonies and Dinner; 6:30 - 9:00 PM:

*Thursday, March 17, 2005:

Morning Plenary, followed by panel and group discussion; 8:30am - 12:30:

Michel Odent, MD: THE SCIENTIFICATION OF LOVE AND THE INDUSTRIALIZATION OF BIRTH ~ “The most urgent problems humankind has to face are all related to different aspects of the capacity to love, including a compassionate interest in unborn generations.”

Special Afternoon Institute; 2:00 - 4:00pm*:

Stephanie Mines, Ph.D.: USING ENERGY MEDICINE FOR THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF EARLY SHOCK AND TRAUMA ~ This institute is open to all but is of particular value to midwives, doulas, family birthing unit nurses, parents, and bodyworkers who serve pregnant women and infants. Dr. Mines is the founder and developer of the TARA Approach for the Resolution of Shock and Trauma. She has created energy medicine applications designed specifically to prevent early shock for the developing fetus and newborn.

*This is Part One of a two part institute

Afternoon Plenary, followed by panel and group discussion; 4:30 - 7:30:

John Peterson Myers, Ph.D.: HORMONAL DISRUPTION: SYNTEHTIC CHEMICALS THAT MIMIC HORMONES AND THEIR IMPACT ON HUMANITY ~ John Peterson Myers is an award-winning environmental journalist and co-author of OUR STOLEN FUTURE, the most controversial and talked about book of the decade. Picking up where SILENT SPRING left off, this groundbreaking work traces birth defects, sexual abnormalities, and reproductive failures to their source – synthetic chemicals that mimic hormones, upsetting normal reproductive and developmental processes. By threatening the ability to reproduce, these chemicals may be invisibly undermining the human future.

*Friday, MARCH 18, 2005:

Morning Plenary; 8:30am - 12:30:

Marilyn Milos, RN: CIRCUMCISION; A PREVENTABLE BIRTH TRAUMA ~ Marilyn Fayre Milos, RN, is co-founder and Executive Director of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC) and coordinator of the International Symposia on Circumcision and Human Rights. She is the recipient of the California Nurses Association’s Maureen Ricke Award “for having raised public consciousness about American’s most unnecessary surgery and her “dedicated and unwavering commitment to righting a wrong.” She also received NurseWeek’s “Nursing Excellence Award” for “outstanding advocacy on behalf of those who are the most vulnerable and unable to protect themselves – infants and children.”

SPECIAL AFTERNOON PROGRAM; 2:00 - 4:00pm:

Come Home to Yourself through Authentic Movement, with Eloise Schaefer

Afternoon Plenary; 4:30 - 7:30:

Suzanne Arms: MOTHER AND CHILD CENTERED BIRTH ~ Suzanne Arms is the author of IMMACULATE DECEPTION, a courageous and intimate look at the true nature of birth and its profound impact on women, children and our world. Her provocative voice has, for over thirty years, articulated how everyone can benefit from changing the way our culture approaches birth.

*Saturday, MARCH 19, 2005:

Morning Plenary; 8:30am - 12:30:

Niravi Payne, MS: MEETING THE MIND/BODY REPRODUCTIVE CHALLENGE OF TODAY ~ An exploration of the complex psychophysiological issues affecting pre-pregnancy, gestation and the birthing experience. A woman’s family history, in utero and childhood experiences and exposure to toxins affects her reproductive system as well as the health and well being of her fetus and the quality of the birthing process. Our body’s chemistry responds to negative states, throwing off the delicately balanced hormonal system involved in reproduction. Niravi Payne is the author of THE WHOLE PERSON FERTILITY PROGRAM: A REVOLUIONTARY MIND-BODY PROCESS TO HELP YOU CONCEIVE. She is the founder of the Whole Person Fertility Program and the Director of the Whole Person Professional Training Institute. Niravi addresses how fertility is shaped by our environment of shock and pollution and what we can do about both prevention and treatment.

SPECIAL AFTERNOON PROGRAM; 2:00 - 4:00pm:

Part Two ~ PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF EARLY SHOCK ~ Stephanie Mines

Two Afternoon Plenaries:

4:30 - 5:30: Stephanie Mines and Michael Mendizza, in dialogue with the audience, summarize what the gathering has learned about prevention, treatment, and our action mandate for the children of the future. This is in preparation for our closing plenary on March 20.

5:30 - 7:30: Kumu Pualani Case: HAWAIIAN RITES OF PASSAGE ~ This ceremonial ritual will be a journey of the cycle of life beginning with the birth of the universe through dance, chant and story. It will focus on the continuing practice of ceremony and rites of passage for our children as a confirmation of our place in the sacred circle of life. “These rites are meant to strengthen the ancestral foundation and broaden opportunities for positive cultural interactions. They are also meant to inspire all peoples in their own ancestral background and reestablish lost traditions.” Pualani Case is a descendant of Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, Portuguese and Caucasian ancestors. Born and raised in Hawaii and immersed in Hula traditions, she has been a teacher of traditional Hula since 1985. She is a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Hilo with a degree in Hawaiian Language. She is the District Resource Teacher for the Kupuna Program with the Department of Education, and teaches Hawaiian Studies and Hula in the Middle School program. She is currently in the process of becoming a doula. She is dedicated to universal healing.

*Sunday, MARCH 20, 2005; 8:30 - 12:30:

THE ACTION MANDATE: Building a Community Strategy and an Action Plan, facilitated by Michael Mendizza ~ Michael Mendizza will synthesize the keynote material, panel discussions and community responses and lead us in creating an action mandate for hospitals, parents, physicians, midwifery schools, doula programs and all those committed to enhancing the birth and primal experience. Michael Mendizza is the founder of Touch the Future, a nonprofit learning design center. He has worked closely with Joseph Chilton Pearce, David Bohm, and J. Krishnamurti in the fields of consciousness and human development. He recently published MAGICAL PARENT-MAGICAL CHILD: THE OPTIMUM LEARNING RELATIONSHIP. “Our children don’t have a chance without a new model and the model we must become can only be learned in relationship with children. Optimize the adult-child relationship and we set the stage for a completely new generation of children, adults and culture.”
